Cosmetic eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, removes excess skin and firms the tissues around the eyelids to restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance to the eyes.

Dr. Gunnar Thors approaches each eyelid lift procedure to address a man’s specific concerns, adjusting his technique to preserve the naturally masculine contours of your eyes. His goal is not to change your appearance, but to correct problems caused by aging eyelids and help you look better refreshed. You may benefit from upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both.
An upper eyelid procedure corrects signs of aging around the upper lids. Dr. Thors removes excess skin to correct drooping and restore the natural eyelid fold. Incisions are typically made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid.
Lower eyelid surgery concentrates on smoothing and firming the skin and tissues just underneath the eye. Incisions are typically made in the lower lash line, through which Dr. Thors removes excess skin and fat and smoothes the remaining tissues to reduce or eliminate puffy under-eye “bags.”
Dr. Thors performs blepharoplasty as an outpatient procedure, using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on your needs and whether or not you are having another procedure during the same operation. Eyelid surgery alone usually takes less than 1 hour to perform, and you will be released to go home shortly after surgery.
Pain isn’t usually an issue, and you will be able to see as soon as you wake up from surgery. Your vision may be blurry for a day or two following surgery, mainly from the lubricating ointment applied to keep your eyes from drying out. Most patients are able to return to work within 1 week after surgery, and exercise may be gradually resumed after 2 to 3 weeks. Dr. Thors will provide detailed instructions to follow as you prepare for and recover from surgery.
Mild to moderate bruising and swelling are common following eyelid surgery, and typically resolve within 10 to 14 days after surgery. Improvements in eyelid contour are noticeably shortly after surgery and results continue to improve over the course of 2 to 3 months, as scars fade and slight residual swelling tapers off.
