Is sagging skin on your upper eyelids or puffy bags and loose, wrinkled skin on your lower lids causing you to appear tired and haggard? There's no need to let these signs of aging send the wrong message about your mood or vitality. Eyelid lift surgery can address excess, sagging skin and restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance to your eyes.
Our eyes help us communicate our feelings and let others know we are paying attention. However, if you have sagging skin on the upper eyelids or puffy bags on your lower lids, your eyes may be sending the wrong message—that you are tired, angry, or uninterested—even when you feel well-rested and happy.
If these signs of aging are bothering you, an eyelid lift can help. Also called blepharoplasty, eyelid lift surgery smoothes and firms the skin around the eyes, removing excess, sagging skin from the upper or lower eyelids, removing or repositioning the fat pockets to produce a more youthful and rested appearance.
Algonquin, Illinois board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Gunnar Thors brings his more than 20 years of training and experience performing this procedure to each patient, helping to achieve a naturally appealing result.
If sagging skin on the upper or lower eyelids is causing you to look overly concerned or haggard, or if puffy lower eyelids are causing you to look tired all the time, eyelid lift surgery can help you look younger and better refreshed by reducing puffiness and baggy skin from around the eyes. Eyelid surgery can also widen your field of vision if loose, excess skin has partially blocked peripheral vision.
Dr. Thors tailors surgery to a patient’s specific needs and goals, and he can adjust his technique to achieve a variety of improvements:
During your consultation, you and Dr. Thors will discuss your concerns and goals, and Dr. Thors will evaluate the skin and tissue around your eyelids to recommend the appropriate procedures to achieve your goals. Many patients choose to combine an eyelid lift with a brow lift or facelift to achieve more comprehensive results.
Dr. Thors performs eyelid surgery as an outpatient procedure, using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of surgery. Dr. Thors varies his technique depending on whether he is rejuvenating your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.
Dr. Thors applies his experience, refined skills and artistry to remove the precise amount of skin or fat necessary to achieve a more open, rested look to your eyes while ensuring a very natural result.
Pain isn’t usually an issue after eyelid surgery, but temporary discomfort, tightness, swelling, bruising are common. Mild to moderate dryness, burning and itching in the eyes are also common for the first week or two. Dr. Thors may prescribe a lubricating ointment to prevent your eyes from drying; this can make your vision blurry, so plan on having help with driving for several days.
Most patients are able to read comfortably 2 to 3 days after surgery, and return to work within 7 to 10 days. If you wear contact lenses, you may need to switch to glasses for several weeks. Exercise can be resumed gradually after about 2 weeks.
In the hands of an experienced facial plastic surgeon, eyelid lift results will last for many years, and your eyes will continue to look better than they would have without surgery, even as the natural aging process continues. You can ensure your rejuvenated eyes look their best by adopting a high-quality, physician-led skin care program.
