Summary of facelift surgery & recovery

Dr. Thors performs facelift surgery using general anesthesia provided by licensed anesthesiology professionals. Through an incision made in the natural folds in front of and behind the ear, behind the hairline, and/or underneath the chin, Dr. Thors will lift and tighten underlying muscles and connective tissue on the face and remove or reposition fat as needed. He will then redrape the skin over the newly lifted tissues, removing extra skin to achieve a smooth, natural contour to the face and neck.

• Length of Surgery: the procedure takes several hours to complete.
• In/Outpatient: Facelifts are usually outpatient procedures; occasionally, patients may require short inpatient stay.
• Side Effects: Temporary bruising, swelling, numbness and tenderness of skin is common for about 2 weeks; your skin may also feel tight and dry for several weeks after surgery. Men will need to begin shaving behind the ears, where beard-growing skin is repositioned, after a facelift.
• Recovery: Back to work in 10 to 14 days. More strenuous activity is prohibited for 2 weeks or more. Typically, bruising and swelling are imperceptible to others after 2 to 3 weeks. You must limit exposure to sun for several months to prevent scars from darkening.
• Duration of Results: With good skin care, results will last for years and age naturally with you. Some patients choose to have a secondary procedure to touch up their results about 5 to 10 years after their initial facelift.
